About the Episode

One of the symptoms of a Cult Brand or a Brand Personality is what we call pervasiveness — their ability to extend beyond their core offering. Our guest today, Tony Hawk, is not only a legendary, iconic, globally recognized retired American professional skateboarder, but also an actor, stuntman, and co-owner of Birdhouse, the skateboard company. Tony has done such a great job representing something beyond himself; he represents skate culture, he was part of a movement. He stayed true to who he was and who he is today. During this episode, we also get a chance to chat with the up and coming female skateboarder Lizzie Armanto as well as listen to some sound advice from the D/CAL agency co-founder, Adam Wilson. So make sure you stay tuned for this great conversation!

"Let’s think about our brands as media conglomerates, let’s think of them as media platforms, and let’s think about programming our brands, programming the messaging across all these different screens and channels. Context matters, probably above content. Leave room in the margins for consumers to help tell the story."
About the Guest
Tony Hawk
Legendary Skateboarder, Entrepreneur, Founder, The Tony Hawk Foundation
Now the most recognized action sports figure in the world, Tony Hawk was nine years old when his brother changed his life by giving him a blue fibreglass Bahne skateboard. By fourteen he’d turned pro, and by sixteen he was widely considered the best skateboarder on earth. In 1999, he became the first skater to ever complete a 900, and shortly thereafter, teamed up with Activision to launch Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, now a billion-dollar video game franchise. He has created a Tony Hawk brand that includes Birdhouse Skateboards, Hawk Clothing, and the Tony Hawk Signature Series sporting goods and toys, authored a New York Times bestseller, and his 900 Films production company launched The RIDE Channel, the most popular skateboarding destination on YouTube. Most recently, Tony partnered with brand marketing veterans to co-found D/CAL, a brand consultancy and creative ad agency based in Detroit and San Diego. His Tony Hawk Foundation has given away over $7.9 million to 611 skatepark projects throughout the world.
